About Our Organization
Since 1996, Gift of Life Donor Program along with its dedicated volunteers have hosted the Donor Dash to promote awareness about organ and tissue donation, and to raise funds to educate the community about the critical need for more organ and tissue donors. Gift of Life Donor Program is the region’s non-profit organ and tissue donor program which serves as the link between those who want to be organ and tissue donors and those who are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant at one of the 15 regional transplant hospitals. Serving the eastern half of Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and Delaware, Gift of Life has coordinated more than 42,000 organ transplants since 1974.
In our region there are more than 5,600 men, women and children more than 119,000 nationally who are waiting for heart, kidney, liver, lung, intestinal and pancreas transplants. Tens of thousands of other patients benefit from cornea, tissue and bone grafts each year as a result of individuals saying yes to tissue donation. Despite the many people who do say yes to organ and tissue donation, 22 people die every day as thousands of transplantable organs are buried each year.
All proceeds received through fundraising for the Donor Dash benefit Transplant Foundation, the charitable foundation supporting the mission of Gift of Life Donor Program. All funds raised at the Donor Dash go to support programs and activities designed to increase organ and tissue donor awareness, including sponsorship of Team Philadelphia's participation in the Transplant Games of America, programs and activities in support of donor and recipient families, including the Gift of Life Family House, which opened in Summer 2011. For more information on the Gift of Life Family House, please visit giftoflifefamilyhouse.org.
The ability to save or enhance the quality of life for patients depends on more individuals giving consent to organ and tissue donation. There are 2 easy ways to register as an organ donor. 1. Say YES when you receive or renew your license or state ID. 2. Sign up online at our website, donors1.org.
