This June 29, 2020 will be 3 years since I donated my kidney to my father. Since then, my other kidney has doubled in size, to accommodate for the loss of the other. My kidney function levels are normal and I feel great. Dad is also doing amazing. He feels better, looks better, can eat without worrying about high potassium foods, and doesn't have to sit in a dialysis chair 3 days a week, for 4 hours a day and feel sick the rest of the day.
This will be my 4th year participating in the Annual Donor Dash, benefiting the Gift of Life Donor Program. Without this program, my father would have a poor quality of life and a shortened life span. I did not want this for him. I did not want him to miss things in life, like his grandchildren growing up, or walking his 3 daughters down the isle on their wedding day....someday. Organ donatation does not only save 1 life, but saves the many lives that surrround that life. This is why I dash. To raise awareness for Organ donation. Many people are not as fortunate to have a Living Donor, which makes organ donation so important.
It's easy to become an organ donor. And NO it does not mean that if you are rushed to the hospital in critical condition, that the doctors withdraw any care or stop doing their absolute best at trying to save your life. By oath, doctor's and nurses do all that can be done in this setting. Organ donation comes into play, when there is nothing else that can be done. Make a decision now, so your family does not have to later. For more information or to register as an organ and tissue donor, visit www.donors1.org.
You cannot use your organs when you are gone. You can't take them to heaven with you. Your heart could save a child's life, who was born with Congenital Heart defects. Your eyes could give sight to someone who has never seen a sunset. Your skin tissue could help a burn victim's reconstruction. Your liver could save a baby born with liver cirrhosis aka biliary atresia. Your uterus could help a woman who could not birth a child, give birth. And so much more. It truely is a wonderful thing.
I'm asking for your help by supporting my fundraising efforts with a donation. Any amount, great or small helps. Just go to http://events.donors1.org/site/TR?fr_id=1150&pg=entry and hit the donate tab. Proceeds from the Donor Dash benefit the Transplant Foundation, a charitable foundation that supports programs and activities for donor and recipient families.
I greatly appreciate all of your support. Go team Bob's Beans!
